Smoking Policy

  1. Introduction

Harvard University recognizes that smoking is dangerous to the health of the smoker and that involuntary smoking is a cause of disease, including lung cancer, in healthy nonsmokers. The simple separation of smokers and nonsmokers within the same air space may reduce, but does not eliminate, the exposure of nonsmokers to environmental tobacco smoke. This applies to all smoking products, i.e., cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. This policy has been developed to protect all persons from the exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and to ensure a safe working environment.

  2. Policy Statement

Smoking is prohibited in all facilities and areas of the entire workplace with no exceptions. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in any Harvard University workplaces, including all common work areas, elevators, hallways, University owned or leased vehicles, restrooms, cafeterias or dining areas, employee lounges, conference and meeting rooms and all other enclosed areas in the workplace. This policy applies to all employees, faculty and staff, consultants, contractors and visitors.

  3. Procedure

Compliance with the smoke-free policy is mandatory for all employees and persons visiting Harvard University. Employees who violate this policy are subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Harvard University will not discharge, refuse to hire or promote, or in any manner retaliate against any employee or applicant because such employee or applicant takes any action in furtherance of the enforcement of this policy.

  4. Questions/Complaints

Complaints regarding the enforcement of the policy are handled through the local human resource office and in accordance with procedures established in each school or department. Staff in the Office of Labor and Employee Relations will also respond to questions or concerns about the smoking policy. OLER can be reached at 617-495-2786.
