Standard Workweek

  1. Standard Workweek

    1. Exempt Employees

Employees exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (executive, administrative, and professional employees) are expected to work to complete the tasks assigned to them.

    2. Overtime-Eligible Non-Bargaining Unit Employees

Due to the nature and complexity of the University’s operations, each school and department establishes normal business hours. The regular workweek for overtime-eligible non-bargaining unit employees is normally 35 to 40 hours per week. For the purposes of calculating payroll, the University’s standard workweek begins on Sunday morning at 12:01 a.m. and ends the following Saturday at 12:00 midnight.

  2. Meal and Break Periods

    1. Exempt Employees

Employees that are exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (executive, administrative, and professional employees) are expected to work to complete the tasks assigned to them. When an exempt employee will work more than six hours, the employee must have the opportunity to take a 30 minute meal break.

    2. Overtime-Eligible Non-Bargaining Unit Employees

Overtime-eligible non-bargaining unit employees usually receive an unpaid meal period of one hour. This time is not considered as time worked.

When an overtime-eligible non-bargaining unit employee works more than six hours, he or she must have the opportunity to take at least a 30 minute unpaid meal break.

It is within each department’s discretion to establish its own policy governing break time. Short rest periods (20 minutes or less) count as time worked and are non-cumulative.
