Prerequisites: Either you have attended an “Introduction to Mindfulness” workshop at Harvard; you have completed “The Basics” course on the Ten Percent Happier app (available for free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff); or you have a well-established personal mindfulness practice. For more info about these prerequisites, visit: hr.harvard.edu/mindfulness.

Description: Resisting or suppressing difficult emotions will not make them go away—instead, these tactics to resist or suppress may actually lead to increased stress, decreased focus, and the unmistakable feeling of overwhelm. When practicing mindfulness, on the other hand, we become better able to recognize and understand our own inner landscapes, catching challenging emotions and thoughts when they arise—even understanding why they might have come about in the first place. This specialized quality of awareness prepares one to move through the world more fluidly, with the confidence that we can make wise choices in even difficult situations.
