Mindfulness and Compassion Lecture Series: Yogic Meditation to the Rescue for Struggling Meditators

Date:

Monday, November 5, 2018, 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Location:

Smith Campus Center Mt Auburn Room (75 Mt. Auburn Street, 2nd floor)

Learning meditation and achieving mindfulness can seem as elusive as catching a unicorn for some new to the practice. Enter yogic meditation, a practice of directed breathing coordinated with simple body movements. This practice gives the restless mind more "doing" to latch onto, and tends to yield a focused, quieter, even peaceful state of mind, for many new students who previously found only squirrels in the attic. It can provide a useful entre to meditation, an important and satisfying "pre-mindfulness".

Douglas Baker, LICSW is a therapist in Cambridge, a Kripalu yoga teacher and teacher of mindfulness. He's a former clinician of the department of psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital, and a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy.
