COVID-19 laid bare the cracks in national leadership and international institutions charged with providing a timely, coordinated response to the pandemic. At the same time, Large non-profits found themselves constrained when delivering aid and assistance on the ground. Yet, self-governed membership associations operating at the grassroots level were uniquely efficient and impactful across the globe. To what extent have these organizations proven better equipped to deal with the pandemic response, and what are the challenges that these associations face when organizing in the age of COVID-19? In addition, how can they seize this moment to turn their organizing into power and influence in political and economic life? At the center of all these questions lies the issue of leadership. We will reflect and discuss these questions and challenges with experienced organizers who, navigating through different political and cultural realities, are working on the ground to empower their constituencies and strengthen democracy.
