This autumn, experience the birds of the Arboretum with expert birder and Arboretum volunteer, Bob Mayer and/or staff birding aficionado, Brendan Keegan. Catch a glimpse of migrating birds as they fly south and get acquainted with our resident birds as well. Bring binoculars if you have them; some binoculars will be available to share. Bonsai Matching

Most of the species seen as bonsai in the Arboretum’s Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection can also be found in the landscape. Explore the history and culture of bonsai and the Arboretum’s relationship with these plants, and compare bonsai with their “unrestricted” counterparts in the landscape. See ginkgo, trident maple, bald cypress, hinoki cypress, and more, large and small!

Art Study Center Seminar: Hot on the Trail of the Artisan—Workshop Practices in 18th- and 19th-Century European Porcelain Manufactories

Gabriella Szalay, the Renke B. and Pamela M. Thye Curatorial Fellow in the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and Tony Sigel, senior conservator of objects and sculpture in the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, will trace some of the “clues” that have been left behind by the artisans who worked in the great porcelain manufactories of 18th- and 19th-century Europe. Art Study Center Seminar: “Avant-Garde” Ceramics in 15th-Century Korea

In this seminar, Soyoung Lee, the Landon and Lavinia Clay Chief Curator at the Harvard Art Museums and a specialist in Korean art, will explore the bold aesthetics and the socio-economic circumstances that led to a new genre of ceramics created on the Korean peninsula during the 15th and 16th centuries. Known by the modern term punch’ŏng ware, these ceramics are defined by their experimental surface decoration of white-slip coating and often abstract or whimsical design. They possess an enduring appeal for the contemporary art lover.
