Candida Höfer: Turks in Germany 1979

Renowned artist Candida Höfer (b. 1944) is best known for her large-format photographs of vacant, sober, and highly detailed interiors. One of her earliest series, however, focused on “guest workers” who joined West Germany’s labor force after World War II. Materials Lab Workshop: Shadow/Substance—Paper Cutting and Kara Walker

This workshop takes inspiration from the art of Kara Walker, whose U.S.A. Idioms will be on view at the Harvard Art Museums through October 2019. This monumental collage, made with Sumi ink on newsprint, sheds new light on the themes of race and history that Walker has explored throughout her long career, including in an extensive body of work featuring silhouettes and other forms of cut paper.

Live music, Oaxacan wood carving, and festive decorations help to make this a joyful event designed to remember and welcome back the spirits of loved ones. Decorate a sugar skull (additional $6 fee); sip spicy chocolate; make papel picado (cut paper banners), cempasúchil flowers, and other artwork; and write a message in any language you choose to place upon the community altar. Anthropology, Colonialism, and the Exploration of Indigenous Australia

In 1938–1939, Harvard University funded an expedition to Australia aimed at understanding how colonization had affected Indigenous peoples and their physiology, and at informing government policy as it shifted from segregation to assimilation. Led by anthropologists Norman B. Tindale and Joseph Birdsell, the expedition gathered more than 6,000 individual records from Indigenous people on missions and settlements—records that have since inspired community-based research projects and land claims.
