Prince Shōtoku: The Secrets Within

In 1930, Ellery Sedgwick (1872–1960), owner and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, traveled from Boston to Japan, where he encountered an extraordinary 13th-century sculpture of Prince Shōtoku at Age Two. Sedgwick ultimately acquired the sculpture of Prince Shōtoku, who is regarded as the founder of Buddhism in Japan. When the sculpture arrived in the United States in 1937, a visiting Japanese conservator discovered that it contained an extraordinary cache of more than 70 dedicatory objects. Walking Tour: Harvard Graduate Center

Charlotte Leib, curatorial intern at the Harvard Art Museums and graduate student at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, will lead a special, hourlong walking tour of the Harvard Graduate Center. The center was designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, his students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and his colleagues at the Cambridge-based firm The Architects Collaborative between 1948 and 1950.

Art Study Center Seminar: Prints from the Brandywine Workshop

The Harvard Art Museums recently acquired 80 prints and proofs from the Brandywine Workshop, a print studio in Philadelphia that has been in operation since the early 1970s. Elizabeth M. Rudy, the Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Associate Curator of Prints, will lead a focused discussion about a selection of these prints.

The seminar will take place in the Art Study Center, Level 4.
