School's Out Vacation Camp - April 2019

Harvard offers a School's Out Vacation Camp program to give parents options during the February and April public-school vacation weeks and one hard-to-cover week at the end of the summer. The program generally runs on three campuses: Cambridge, the Longwood Medical Area, and the Harvard Business School.

The program is open to the children, ages 5 to 12, grades K to 6, of benefits-eligible faculty and staff on a regular Harvard payroll.

The American chestnut could be the first tree ever restored to its native forest after suffering from a devastating airborne blight in the early 1900s that killed billions of trees.

Confused about how to prune your hydrangeas to maximize flowering and increase health? You are not alone! Join Jen Kettell for a lively discussion on the species behind the hot trade names and how to prune them. In addition, Jen will focus on how to match appropriate plants to your site conditions. She’ll suggest which species are drought-tolerant or benefit pollinators and other essential growing tips. Jen will focus on hydrangeas that are hardy in Zones 5-7. Grafting Woody Plants

Grafting is the technique of joining parts of separate plants in such a manner that they unite and continue their growth as one. Learn basic principles of grafting with an overview of different types of dormant-season grafts. Arnold Arboretum propagator Sean Halloran will provide step-by-step instructions so that you can practice both cleft and side veneer grafts using apple root stock. Simple after-care will be required until planting out in springtime. Registrants will need to sign an Assumption of Risk and Release in order to participate in this class.

Planning and Creating a Compact Orchard

Become a backyard orchardist and grow your own fruit! Even with a small yard, you can enjoy fruit from your own trees with minimal effort and cost. This step-by-step workshop will teach you all you need to know to plan and create a compact orchard for years of enjoyment. Participants will spend part of the workshop outside in the orchard for a pruning demonstration, so dress accordingly. Space is limited; pre-registration required.
