Archaeological Exploration of Sardis

Since its founding in 1958 by Harvard and Cornell Universities, the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis has excavated, conserved, and published on aspects of the ancient city of Sardis in western Turkey from prehistoric through Islamic periods. The expedition is one of the longest running international projects sponsored at Harvard and is one of the oldest classical archaeological projects in the Mediterranean. Delaroche’s Egyptian Excursion: Following the Course of Moses Exposed on the Nile

Annual Henri Zerner Lecture

Paul Delaroche’s Moses Exposed on the Nile, painted for Baron James de Rothschild in 1853, has vanished without a trace. While its memory is preserved in a fine contemporary engraving, an abundant series of drawings leading up to the final composition, which Delaroche developed over at least 10 years, is of equal interest. The drawings reveal the artist’s knowledge of past renderings of the subject, and also illuminate his distinctive method of incorporating paired motifs in his work.

Art Study Center Seminar: Géricault, Printmaking, and Popular Culture

In this seminar, Henri Zerner, professor emeritus of the history of art and architecture at Harvard and former curator of prints at the Fogg Museum, and A. Cassandra Albinson, the Margaret S. Winthrop Curator of European Art in the museums’ Division of European and American Art, will discuss prints by Théodore Géricault. They’ll demonstrate how his work relates to popular imagery from the Restoration period by examining the artist’s prints alongside works by more commercial printmakers, such as Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet and Carle Vernet.
