Summer Science Week - Ocean Week

Students entering grades 6–8

Ocean week brings the magic of the sea to the HMNH. Students will immerse themselves in marine science as they work with graduate students on inquiry-based lessons examining museum specimens, observing live animals and even dissecting a squid!

Summer Science Week - Geology, Gems, and Jewelry

Students entering grades 5–8

Red garnets, purple amethyst, blue turquoise – these jewels are actually naturally made rocks and minerals! Learn the geology behind your favorite gems. Then learn jewelry techniques to turn real rocks, minerals, and semi-precious stones into earrings, necklaces, pendants and more in this class that combines art with science.

This class has an additional $10 materials fee included in the cost of the program.

Summer Science Week - Blue Planet: Life in the Sea

Sharks, crabs, sea stars and turtles; these are just a few of the marine creatures we’ll study as we dive into the underwater world. Learn all about our blue planet by investigating real specimens, observing adaptations of live ocean animals, making crafts, playing games and exploring our Marine Life exhibit.

Summer Science Week - Game Design

Students entering grades 4–6

Have you ever wanted to design your own game? Join Green Door Labs founder Kellian Adams and museum staff to plan and create a digital game set inside the museum. You will work in small groups to invent a game designed to help visitors explore the museum. After prototyping the concept on paper, you will build the game on the digital platform and test it in the galleries.
