Film: The Eagle Huntress

The documentary The Eagle Huntress (2016) follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old girl who lives in the Altai Mountains in Mongolia, as she trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter and rises to the pinnacle of the centuries-old tradition.

Modern Art in Technicolor: Art, Film, and American Identity

Focusing on postwar American art and film, this series examines the formation of national identity. Each screening pairs a work from the museums’ modern and contemporary art collection with a film that speaks to its concerns. As in any dialogue, the conversation goes both ways: as the chosen artworks reveal hidden complexities in apparently simple films, the selected films use narrative to tease out and make apparent the aesthetic and social ambitions of art. The series is programmed by Harmon Siegel, a Ph.D. student in the History of Art and Architecture program at Harvard.

Family Walk: Barking up the Right Tree

Arnold Arboretum - 125 Arborway, Boston, MA

Explore and learn about the variety of bark found on many trees of the Arboretum. Children and their families will participate in a “Mystery Bark” activity using blindfolds (not required) and their sense of touch!  A scavenger hunt sheet will also be distributed so families can linger on the grounds for more exploration after the walk.One adult may bring a maximum of three children; suitable for children ages four through eight.

The New American Chestnut

Much work has gone into attempting to bring back the American chestnut (Castanea dentata), decimated by the exotic chestnut blight fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica) beginning in the late 1800s. Breeding by crossing and back-crossing with Japanese and Chinese species has produced positive results, but genetic engineering is proving more viable. William A. Powell, involved in transgenic research that has produced a tree that is 99.999% American chestnut, will speak about this work and the possibilities for reviving a species once ubiquitous in eastern North American forests.
