Layoff Procedures and Services

When the position of an exempt or overtime-eligible non-bargaining-unit employee is eliminated, he or she is entitled to at least 60 days written notice or 60 days pay in lieu of notice, except those who occupy grant-funded positions, in which case he or she is eligible for at least 30 days written notice or 30 days pay in lieu of notice.

As a condition of the receipt of the following layoff benefits, an employee may be required to sign an agreement and release, with such terms as Harvard in its sole discretion may require:

  1. Identification of an individual (employment coach) to assist the employee in developing a transition plan;
  2. Severance pay as described below; and
  3. Subsidized continuation of medical/dental coverage for 52 weeks (if elected under COBRA) at 1 ½ times the regular group rate for Harvard University staff.

See Sub-section 5 for information regarding term appointments.
