Term Appointments and Group Transfers

  1. Term Appointments

    The provisions of the layoff policy described in this Manual do not apply to employees hired for a specified term of employment. An employee will not be entitled to severance pay or layoff benefits of any kind at the end of the term appointment. Any employee who holds a position for a specific period of time who is terminated by layoff before the appointment ends may be eligible for severance benefits and medical and dental plan coverage at the layoff rate (unless the termination is for cause, including unsatisfactory performance). Any exceptions to this policy should be discussed in advance with the local human resources officer.
  2. Group Transfers to other employer

    From time to time, a functional group may transfer from the direct employment of Harvard University to another employer outside of Harvard. Employees who are offered reasonably comparable employment by the new employer in this circumstance will not be deemed to have been laid off and will not be eligible for the benefits described in this section.
