Woman and man smiling while looking over financial information

Harvard University offers a comprehensive range of financial protection plans designed to support faculty, staff, and their families. These plans are aimed at providing security in the event of illness, injury, or other unexpected circumstances. Here’s an overview of the available benefits.

Life & Disability Plans

Harvard provides essential life and disability benefits to help you take care of yourself and your family in the event of a loss of income due to illness or injury:

  • Short-Term Disability (STD):
Harvard provides eligible employees with STD benefits for up to 26 weeks within a 52-week period in case of illness or injury. You do not need to enroll, and there is no cost to you. For additional details, please refer to our STD Overview.
  • Long-Term Disability (LTD):
If you are unable to work due to injury or illness for more than 180 days, LTD benefits can help replace your salary and protect your financial security. You must enroll to be covered. More information is available in our LTD Overview.
  • Life Insurance:
Harvard offers eligible employees Basic Life Insurance coverage equal to one-half of their annual base salary at no cost. You may also choose to purchase Supplemental Life Insurance for yourself or Dependent Life Insurance for eligible family members. Please refer to our Life Insurance Overview or visit the MetLife Harvard website and click on Life Insurance for further details.
  • Workers’ Compensation:
If you experience a work-related injury or illness that prevents you from performing your job, Workers’ Compensation provides temporary income benefits. There is no need to enroll in this coverage. For more information, refer to the Workers’ Compensation Overview.

Faculty and staff can find additional information on our employee website, HARVie's Life and Disability page (HarvardKey required).

In addition to life and disability coverage, Harvard offers several other insurance options to help safeguard your financial wellbeing:

  • Group Home and Auto Insurance:

  • Permanent Life Insurance and Long Term Care Benefit:
The Permanent Life Insurance with Long Term Care (LTC) benefit, offered through Trustmark Insurance, provides financial support for long-term care services, like home health care, assisted living, and adult day care, along with a death benefit through life insurance. Annual enrollment held in February/March and once enrolled, your rate will not change.
  • Pet Insurance:
Harvard offers pet insurance through Pets Best for cats and dogs, with flexible coverage options and payroll deductions. Enroll at any time, but enroll by the 15th of the month to start coverage on the first day of the following month. You’ll also receive a 5% discount on their BestBenefits Plan.
