Harvard Heroes 2017
Now in its sixth year as a University-wide recognition program, Harvard Heroes celebrates the accomplishments of Harvard staff whose work supports the mission of Harvard at the highest levels of contribution, impact and excellence.
This year’s Harvard Heroes awards ceremony, hosted by President Drew G. Faust, will be held:
Monday, June 5, 3:30 p.m.
Memorial Hall, Sanders Theatre
Reception to follow at Annenberg Hall (next to Sanders Theatre)
All employees are invited and no tickets are needed.
What is Harvard Heroes?
Harvard staff members contribute vitally to Harvard’s excellence. Staff contributions include building and maintaining a vast infrastructure (technical, financial, physical and human) upon which the academic enterprise relies.
Harvard Heroes is an annual program held every spring that recognizes and celebrates high-performing staff from across every School and the Central Administration. These staff members have been nominated and/or selected by their peers and departments for their leadership, teamwork, adaptability, innovation and exceptional contributions.
All employees are invited to attend the awards ceremony and reception, but first we need your help to identify the Heroes among us!
Nominations Are Open February 22 to March 10
Being named a Harvard Hero is an honor of high distinction – only about 60 Heroes, or ½ of 1% of eligible staff, will be named. We need your help to make sure we find and recognize the staff Heroes at Harvard. Please review the nomination criteria and nominate your Harvard Hero, now through March 10.
Beginning this year, the form will enable multiple nominators to submit a single nomination jointly. As always, selection committees look at quality and merit rather than the quantity of nominations received for a single person, so collaborating on one strong nomination is encouraged. In a similar vein, a strong nomination from a single nominator will be given the same consideration as one from several nominators.
To be eligible to be nominated, staff must be administrative/professional, support or hourly employees with at least one year of “benefits-eligible” service. Harvard coaches in the “other academic” group are also eligible. Please note that Harvard Heroes recognizes outstanding individuals, not teams. Heroes does not provide posthumous recognition.
The nomination process varies by school/unit. Refer to the chart below or contact your local Heroes coordinator to learn about the process in your area. (see the Fact Sheet for more information.)

2016 Harvard Heroes
Congratulations to the 63 outstanding Harvard staff members from across the University who were recognized as 2016 Harvard Heroes. They were celebrated for their extraordinary “above and beyond” contributions at an awards ceremony, hosted by President Drew Faust on June 6, 2016, and attended by a full house of family, friends and colleagues. You’ve invited to view photos of the ceremony and reception and the videos “What Makes a Hero” and “Harvard Heroes 2016: In Their Own Words,” both featuring 2016 Heroes. Read about the Award Ceremony in the Harvard Gazette.
