What is Harvard Heroes?

Harvard staff members contribute vitally to Harvard’s excellence. Staff contributions include building and maintaining a vast infrastructure (technical, financial, physical and human) upon which the academic enterprise relies.

Harvard Heroes is an annual program held each spring to celebrate high-performing staff from across every School and the Central Administration with both local and University-wide recognition. These staff members are nominated and/or selected by their peers and departments for their leadership, teamwork, adaptability, innovation and exceptional contributions. (For more information about Harvard Heroes, see the Fact Sheet.)

Being named a Harvard Hero is an honor of high distinction – only about 60 Heroes, or ½ of 1% of eligible staff, will be named, with selection based on 11 important criteria.

The nomination period was open from February 20-March 9, and is now closed. Harvard Heroes will be announced in late April. For more information about the Harvard Heroes process in your area, please refer to the chart below.

Congratulations to the 60 outstanding Harvard staff members from across the University who were selected as Harvard Heroes for 2017. They were celebrated for their extraordinary and inspiring contributions to the University and its mission at an awards ceremony, hosted by President Drew Faust on June 5, 2017, attended by a full house of family, friends and colleagues. You’ve invited to view the photos of the 2017 ceremony and reception and the videos, "Why Are They Our Harvard Heroes?" and “The Harvard Heroes Questionnaire.” Read more about the Ceremony and some of this year's Heroes in the Harvard Gazette.
