Gallery Talk: The Renovation and Expansion Project

Join us for an architectural tour that will stop on all of the Harvard Art Museums’ public floors, led by Peter Atkinson, director of facilities planning and management. You will hear about the history of the building, which is registered on the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as learn more about the concepts behind and execution of our eight-year renovation and expansion project.

Note that this tour will last 60 minutes.

Numismatic Archaeology: Interpreting Coin Finds from Excavation Contexts

What do the finds of coins in archaeological excavations tell us about the history of the use of the site? In this lecture, Alan Stahl, curator of numismatics and lecturer in the Departments of Art and Archaeology, Classics, and History at Princeton University, will provide examples from ancient, Islamic, Byzantine, and medieval contexts in Syria, Asia Minor, Cyprus, and the New World to illustrate the potential—and the perils—of deducing chronology, habitation history, and monetary circulation from coin finds. Stahl is a recipient of the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society.

50 Years a Curator: Whatever Happened to the Art World We Knew?

Theodore E. Stebbins Jr., curator of American art, emeritus, at the Harvard Art Museums, and former curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Yale University Art Gallery, will offer his views on some of the seismic changes he has observed in the art world since 1961. He will describe such positive developments as the growing popularity of art and art museums and the ever-increasing quality of exhibitions, and less positive ones, including the decline of connoisseurship. Stebbins will discuss the work of Andrew Wyeth and Jeff Koons, among others.
